Affirmations – Doing Them Wrong Could Hurt You!
Doing Affirmations the wrong way could actually hurt you!
It is true in my experience. Doing something you think will help you yet not doing it correctly can leave you feeling hurt and let down and disappointed.
That is why I feel that proper guidance is so important in making any changes and improvements in your life.
As with anything else in life, there is a right way and a wrong way to do things. There may even be an optimal way to achieve your goals and that is what I am always striving for to help you live in the prime of your life. Here in NYC we have tons of stress and it is a matter of living WITH this and adapting so that it helps you to achieve your goals.
Later in this article, I promise to give you a crash course in how to effectively say affirmations that will actually help you, yet before you do I want to just show some contexts of how we have choices. Taking action or taking no action are both choices. So the idea is to take the action that will get you what you want ( without harming others )
A stressed out person living in a big city like New York City may attempt to deal with stress in several ways.
A. They could move from NYC and look for some other place to enjoy the prime of their lives. Yet is this really a solution?
There may be less stress.
If the stress and problems were because of the city then they would feel better and healthier. However, as with most things in life it is more likely that the stress and problems would follow them to this new place, too. You just cannot run away from yourself! Or you may find yourself constantly running from place to place and searching for that illusive happiness. It really needs to start from within inside of yourself and then any place you go to will have its good points and bad points. A big stressful city like nyc has great opportunity for many occupations, it has excellent architecture, vast culture and fine dining. It is also incredibly crowded, noisy, sometimes smelly and the cost of living is as high as the sky scrapers.
With the right attitude and beliefs and feelings of self worth you can make it here in NYC or anywhere. Without those crucial skills and tools you may feel adrift no matter where you travel to. You will be taking the SAME YOU LONG with you, including much of your baggage.
It is true that once you get away from certain people, places and things you are more free from past habits, etc. however this is not a real solution. You will want to be aware of how these people, places and things make you feel and be prepared. Mentally rehearsing how much better you can deal with these people, places and things will be much healthier and more effective than trying to run from them.
B. This same person could stay in the big city like NYC and learn to deal with their stress in a more healthy way. They could learn to change habits and beliefs and have their present actions reinforce these new healthier beliefs and habits.
They could work on themselves, either on their own or with professional guidance like the prime kind that we offer. They could figure out how to deal with the noise, negotiate through the crowds and discover themselves feeling much more confident and comfortable adapting to all the possible changes in their lives.
C. This same person could read the wrong books, take the wrong advice and grit their teeth as they perform affirmations that feel totally false and foolish to them. This often happens with this technique unless it is taught correctly. There is something called psychological reversal which kicks in and rears its ugly head. This monster comes out and does damage and was most likely programmed in your past.
Someone compliments you and you either feel they want something from you or they are playing a mean trick on you. Either way you get a sense of unease and distrust. How could anyone like the way you look? You have years of not so positive experience and negative self talk that came from people in your past. These old programs start playing whenever you make an attempt to change something about yourself. This is why so many people attempt to make changes in their weight, their habits or beliefs and eventually give up and fail.
Most people try instead of doing their best. Most people get an inspiration bubble that gets them motivated for a short time until the bubble bursts and then they have no more clear direction.
So what is the RIGHT way to do affirmations, you ask?
The correct way is to learn how your mind works and write affirmations that your mind will accept as probable and even possible.
If you follow the wrong advice and write out and say very overly optimistic statements that do not feel right to you then you will be either wasting time or even harming yourself.
Addressing certain realities first and THEN tagging in the positive statements is one key way to make affirmations more effective.
Then there are various methods that deal with tapping, massaging or holding certain pressure points or acupressure points on the body that make these affirmations even more effective ( you can look up Gary Craig’s Emotional Freedom Technique, EFT, or other variations such as, Energy Psychology and others or call me and learn to improve your life now )
So for this article I want you to look over any affirmations you may have and adjust them until they feel right to you.
Focus first on what is stopping you, slowing you down or getting in the way of success. Sugar coating things will not help you and being too brutal will also not be useful.
Example :
You have been wanting to achieve a certain goal X and you have not gotten started yet. You may not even know what is preventing you from starting.
"Even though I have not started doing X yet I still accept myself."
"Even though I do not know yet what is stopping me from achieving X, I deeply accept myself."
Address this as you say it out loud and notice what it feels like. Eventually, you may be able to say that you "accept myself completely" and really feel that it is true. I am a big believer in trusting how you feel. Gradually, change your affirmations as you start to feel better about yourself.
It could be that you hate that you are lazy and it is frustrating so say it.
"Even though I am frustrated at my laziness, I still accept myself." is kinder than "Even though I am a lazy idiot, I am accepting myself more every day." This is a bit rougher yet may be what one person needs to get things done. For another person that same statement will feel awful and they will give up. So it is vital that you tailor your affirmations to who you are and who you want to become. Your BEST SELF!
For one person one statement will just feel more true.
Maybe you find yourself easily distracted.
"Even though I get easily distracted I still appreciate myself and am working on improving my focus."
This addresses what you feel is true about yourself and then gives you the positive self statement and the last part will feel right to you as you say it ONLY if you actually do something to improve your focus. You could find a way to meditate on your breathing and adapt a certain zenlike calm. You can contact me about this and I will gladly help.
It could be that you do not follow through and so you start getting good results and then just get stuck or stop. This is all too common and why it is recommended that you seek the right kind of guidance and coaching.
"Even though I fail to follow through, I still accept myself as I learn to follow through."
This statement could pace your present reality while giving you a positive self pep talk and then guiding you to follow through and continue to do things that are helping you. Who knows, it could be that you will find yourself following through and contacting me and finding it so much easier to follow through and achieve your goals of healthier life and success

How Your Past Shapes Your Experience Of Life, And What You Can Do About It
Dealing with the symptoms has become a whole way of life for many people. Counseling, meditating, affirmations, intellectualizing – all aimed at avoiding or silencing the symptom – emotional pain.
I am no longer bound by my sick past. There is healing in my future. For the next twenty-four hours, I choose to free and heal. I choose to let go of the past hurts that I cannot undo.
Creating Meaningful Affirmations
When we give in to negative thinking, we feel judged, criticized, victimized and powerless. And when we act based upon these negative thoughts, we are acting from a place of fear and anger, rather than from our truth.
