The word codependency was originally developed to describe a set of responses and behaviors that people who live with an alcoholic or drug abuser tend to develop. Through time, however the term has become broader to include those individuals who present these behaviors, but may have developed them as a result of their childhood, not necessarily as a result of living with a substance abuser or alcoholic.
Codependent people are unable to accept themselves as complete individuals. The image that they have of themselves is low, and they feel that they need others to approve of them, accept them, or love them before they can feel complete. Codependency is caused by a low self-esteem and blindness towards their own potential.
Codependent people are usually very unhappy. Their quality of life is greatly affected by their peace keeping efforts and their energy is constantly directed towards others, rather than caring for themselves. It is a horrible web to be caught up in, but thankfully it can be aided through naturally. It takes learning that they can love without needing love and receive without needing to give. They can learn to take care of themselves and need not look to another for approval, love, or guidance.
Typically, codependent people have the following symptoms:
Inability to say "no"
Always blaming self
Always accepting blame
Always apologizing
Reacting to the wishes of others rather than their own
